Paula K. Tonemah and her husband Larry White Crow make their home in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. From brain tanned traditional leatherwork to jewelry, each design, Larry and Paula create is unique and made with all natural materials. Artist and Author Paula was raised in a family filled with artists, being the youngest she was in a position to learn from her elders and her siblings. Paula is proud to carry on the traditional bead,quill, and leather work passed down to her. At age 8 she began doing loom-work and leather work.
Over the years Paula has been fortunate enough to learn traditional art from many other artists and elders of various tribes. Each sharing with her the wonderful variety of designs and techniques used Although Paula began "dabbling" in oils at an early age, she did not begin studying oil painting until the '90's. Since then Paula has developed her own signature style.
"I try and incorporate something spiritual in all my paintings and our history in my bead work. "Spirituality is in everything around us and our history is how we learn. I believe these elements are who we are as a race of people.
Relying on her storytelling ability and with the help of famous author, Ed McGaa, she began writing accurate history for school aged children.
In June 2007 Paula was pleased to release her first book Spirit Horse - An Adventure In Crazy Horse Country. Her newest book The Animals Talk was released in 2009. Both books are published by Four Directions Publishing
